The reproduction of black ants is mainly based on parthenogenesis, sometimes bisexual. Monoecious eggs hatch into males, while fertilized eggs hatch into females.

Black ants usually build nests on pine trees, thorns, and near large rocks. There are nest building activities in spring, summer, and autumn. Black ants often roam in dense pine forests with high canopy density, abundant vegetation, and moist ground, especially near water sources, in order to forage. On sunny days after prolonged rain in spring, summer, and autumn, outdoor activities are most frequent. A small number of ants also go out for activities on sunny afternoons in winter.
